A bridge may be recommended if you’re missing one or more teeth. They span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. Before either a crown or a bridge can be made, the tooth (or teeth) must be reduced in size so that the crown or bridge will fit over it properly. After reducing the tooth/teeth, your dentist will take an impression to provide an exact mould for the crown or bridge. If porcelain is to be used, your dentist will determine the correct shade for the crown or bridge to match the colour of your existing teeth.
Dental crowns or caps are custom-made coverings for a tooth, generally after a root canal procedure. Dental crowns protect the tooth from the forces exerted during chewing so that it doesn’t get fractured. Dental crowns are necessary for the structural durability of the remaining tooth structure for a better prognosis of the tooth after RCT.
The fixation of the dental cap/ crown takes two sittings. The first sitting involves shaping the tooth to make space for the dental cap. After the shaping and finishing of the tooth, an impression is taken, which is sent to the lab to fabricate the crown. The fabricated dental cap or crown is cemented onto the tooth in the second sitting, usually after 2 to 4 days after the first sitting. At Sindha Dental Clinic, our chief dentist, Dr. Dharmendra Sindha, ensures that the best dental labs fabricate the caps for better results.
Dental bridges are fixed prostheses that replace missing teeth. The dental bridge takes support from the adjacent teeth to replace the single or multiple missing teeth. Dental bridges are a traditional way of replacing missing teeth using a fixed prosthesis that usually lasts 10-15 years. At Sindha Dental clinic, Bharuch, our team of specialists, under the supervision of Dr. Dharmendra Sindha, will evaluate the teeth clinically and radiologically to formulate a customized treatment plan for you.
There are different varieties of dental crowns and bridges available based on the types of material used. Some of the most common types are listed below:
It is also known as porcelain crowns, made of aesthetic material matching natural teeth. Best suited for replacing front teeth. This is an excellent choice for aesthetic concerns.
It comprises a base layer of metal with ceramic on top of it for aesthetic reasons. The metal provides the dental crown and bridge strength, whereas the ceramic coating gives a natural appearance.
The only drawback is that the ceramic coating can wear off with time, exposing the underlying metal. Traditionally used porcelain fused to metal crowns and bridges is still the most affordable option for dental crowns and bridges.
The latest material used in dentistry is zirconia, which offers strength, durability, and esthetics. There is no underlying metal base in the zirconia variant of the dental crown and bridge, making it a more aesthetic choice for the prosthesis.
